Deep in the Valley of the Ten Peaks hides one of Banff National Park’s most breathtaking jewels, Moraine Lake. Some know it as Lago Moraine: this iconic turquoise lake is as much a photograph as it is a starting point for some of the most rewarding hikes in the Canadian Rockies. For those wondering what kind of action lies beyond a photograph at the famed rockpile viewpoint, here are five hikes around Moraine Lake that inspire and tease people with the prospect of even more time in the wild.

1. Rockpile Trail
This easy and short path, gives that classic postcard view of Moraine Lake. It is only about 300 m long, leading to a viewpoint that is absolutely breathtaking at sunrise. Though easy, it is the most number-one rewarding viewpoint for some minimal effort: great for any visitor, especially ones arriving via the Moraine Lake shuttle.

2. Consolation Lakes path
Consolation Lakes is not a very long hike rather easy, even a family-friendly trail. It starts from the parking area beside the lake and wanders through fabulously wooded trails to two indeed charming alpine lakes. It is a 6km round trip, offers peaceful views, and is quite close to Moraine Lake for short getaways from crowds.

3. Larch Valley Trail
Wanting to see Moraine Lake from above? This trail takes you through golden larch trees (especially in the fall), its slopes offering views with the breathtaking Ten Peaks as a backdrop. Moderately strenuous, the 8.6 km hike, with moderate elevation gain, remains one of the best experiences in Banff, blending forest, mountain, and alpine scenery.

4. Eiffel Lake Trail
Branching off of Larch Valley Trail, this route offers an unparalleled overhead view of Lago Moraine and the surrounding valley below. It is a less traveled way with sights to rival any park in the area. Approximately 11.2 km round trip, it is moderately difficult and worth every step.
5. Sentinel Pass
For experienced hikers looking for a dramatic climb, Sentinel Pass delivers. Continue past Larch Valley and climb toward the pass for unbelievable views over Paradise Valley. It’s a demanding hike, but being up in the clouds looking down at Moraine Lake’s location is a reward few get to enjoy.
